The battle started with the German Attack on the fortresses around Verdun in the spring of 1916.
The fighting over the strategically irrelevant area around Verdun raged over 9 months.
The battle ended in December 1916 when the French Army retook the region. With over 700,000 casualties both armies literally bled themselves dry over Verdun.
